Books

The Sum of Us - Heather McGee
The subtitle is “what racism costs everyone and how we can prosper together.” An easy illuminating read that we could not recommend higher. If you only read one book about how capitalism and racism intertwine in modern America and how we got here - this is it.

The Whiteness of Wealth - Dorothy A. Brown
A groundbreaking exposé of racism in the American taxation system from a law professor and expert on tax policy. Surprisingly easy to read for being denser subject matter.

Decolonizing Wealth - Edgar Villanueva
A look at the dysfunctional colonial dynamics specifically in philanthropy and finance. Written from an indigenous perspective with solutions that involve changing how we think about money and charity themselves.

Mutual Aid - Dean Spade
This book explains modern Mutual Aid as a practice and tactic, but also dives into the problems the left encounters with mutual aid by inadvertently supporting existing power structures if there’s not some key revolutionary idea-spreading going on in addition to just helping people in crisis every time the status quo puts people in crisis.

Systematic Racism and Capitalism: Alliance of Oppression - Scott Heggs
A look at systematic racism and capitalism: what they are, how they work, and why we should care. This is great for those of us who love to read but don't have a lot of time, or for those of us who don't read but should.

The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism - Edward Baptist
A sweeping, authoritative history of the expansion of slavery in America, showing how forced migrations radically altered the nation's economic, political, and cultural landscape. (interview with author on YouTube)
